Get to Know Pat Gibson
Pat Gibson is a remarkably humble woman who started out as a reading teacher. Later, she served as an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor who applied her passion for helping others through literacy and created Trident Literacy Association. This Virginia native planted the seed for the organization in 1972. Gibson quickly dismisses the notion that she is solely responsible for starting Trident Literacy Association but rather was just trying to do the right thing by filling a need in the community.
One day at a card shop, Gibson was asked by an older gentleman if a greeting card was appropriate for his grandson. He held up the card for her to read it to him. Later, the clerk thanked Gibson for helping the man and said, “He is in here all the time buying cards but he can’t read them.” This is just one of the stories that Pat tells of why she started Trident Literacy.
As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, we reflect back on the early days of Trident Literacy.
In the beginning, Gibson matched students to volunteer tutors to assist students in learning to read. She maintained the students’ personal records on index cards that were placed in a shoebox and stored safely under her bed.
Gibson’s simple matching method from an organized shoebox has evolved into a holistic case management approach to best serve the students’ educational and immediate needs. This holistic method allows the students to focus much more clearly on their educational path.
The basic literacy programs include GED-preparation courses, career readiness, ESL, and digital literacy. In addition, comprehensive family literacy, individual advising, and parenting skills are offered to fulfill the students’ ever-evolving needs.
On average, Trident Literacy provides instruction to more than 800 students annually with the assistance of over 100 volunteers. Trident Literacy reflects on the many notable student achievements that have benefited thousands of adults. These students who often fall through the cracks have changed the course of their lives for themselves and their families. Trident Literacy students also assist in the larger goal of reversing the cycle of generational poverty and illiteracy for the future.
Gibson’s legacy will continue through Trident Literacy’s existing and new advancements in literacy initiatives. Gibson found a need and filled that need in the community for generations to come.
