Trident Literacy Student Named Employee of the Year
To get to her job at McDonald’s, Bernice Fields sometimes rides her bike in 23-degree weather. The journey is eight miles, round-trip, and she’s made that trip for an entire year as of May 17, 2008. Why does she do it? Because she loves her job, and she has actually amazed herself to see that she could accomplish these personal and work goals every day. She also says that her job has helped her learn about her ability to solve problems, and has driven her to achieve more in her life.

Palmetto PALS donates magazines to Trident Literacy
Local author Ellen de Jong has initiated a program dubbed Palmetto PALS—Periodicals to Aid Literacy Skills, with Trident Literacy Association as its primary beneficiary.

Starting in late March, de Jong began collecting magazines under a year old and in good condition. By the end of April she had collected 234 magazines of all kinds from friends, family and neighbors on Folly Beach. She delivered these to Trident Literacy’s T. C. Drayton Center on Meeting Street in downtown Charleston.
“I feel it can be very motivating to have something other than ‘textbook’ materials available for adult students to use either in the classroom or at home, or both, to help them practice and refine their reading skills,” de Jong said.
