Literacy is important in our community because improved literacy means a better qualified workforce, and a stronger economy.
Being functionally illiterate means being unable to perform a variety of skills that are essential for success in daily life, like filling out a job application or getting a driver's license, reading a medicine label or using a telephone book -- factors that severely limit one's opportunities for employment or advancement.
The mission of Trident Literacy Association is to increase literacy in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties by offering instruction, using a self-paced, individualized curriculum in reading, writing, mathematics, English as a Second Language, GED preparation, and basic computer use.
Being literate means being able to read the newspaper or a medicine bottle, or to complete a job application. It means a better life.
